MOTS-c is a mitochondrial-derived peptide composed of 16 amino acids, encoded by the mitochondrial genome. It plays a critical role in cellular metabolic regulation and energy homeostasis. MOTS-c is unique among mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs) due to its ability to translocate to the nucleus during metabolic stress, where it regulates the expression of nuclear genes related to mitochondrial biogenesis, antioxidant responses, and metabolic adaptation.
